Pretest
Grant Wiggins was born and raised in Louisiana. He is a young elementary teacher around his 20's. He is one of the few African Americans that has an education during the time. One of his conflict was to get out of the racist white community. Even though Grant is an educated black man, white people still think that they are of a higher class than him. The way that they have treated him made him feel enraged, making him care for no one else but himself.
Another one of his conflicts was that he was obligated to helping out a man named Jefferson who was given death penalty. During the trial, Jefferson defense attorney proclaimed that he was a hog and that he did not the brains to commit any wrong doings. Once this was heard, Miss Emma ( Jefferson's Godmother) was highly frustrated at the absurd comment. She felt that if Jefferson was to die, then he was going to die as a man.
Since Grant had an education, he was asked to visit Jefferson in jail and teach him. Grant refused immediately pointing out that there was no hope for Jefferson. Tante Lou told him that he had to which made him feel obligated to do so. As time went on, Grant started to grow a bond with Jefferson each time he visited him. He help Jefferson become educated, but he still dies.
